Would've posted it in the old thread, but I thought the news would get lost in the backpages...
Just when we all gave up hope on this project ever being completed, here's some very fine news courtesy of the official King's X site, as sent in by Mr. Doug Pinnick! ... Seems Mike McCready decided to join in as well!:
update: 8.3.2004
-doug sent some photos from his recording session with Jeff Ament (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8) and here's some news... -doug has wrapped up his project with Jeff Ament (Pearl Jam): "The project with (Jeff, Mike & Richard) sort of has a southern rock/classic sound, a bit of the rolling stones vibe, a little jam band vibe some groovy/funky tunes, and a few beautiful ballads.. Jeff is on bass, Richard is on drums and me on guitar for half of it.. ...then Mike showed up and we rocked out about 7 more with him on guitar also..15 songs...Richard and I do all the vocals... we have to do a final tweak before it gets mixed.. we have no name yet or a release date... tentatively called (Montana)...its all good!" -dUg
Grrroovey!!!!! Exxxcellent! Yeah!!! Happy me!! Me happy!! It's only Doug that ever talks about that project... And again, I'm happy to see Mike getting involved with that project also. Seems the lineup isn't all that different from what we're used to with 3F! Only Maestro Doug, All Good! And the pictures, a delight! And if they (mini) tour, that one I won't miss, I won't do what I did with 3F, no way! Many thanks for the post Sarah!
And the medias announce it too, I got this today from billboard.com, it's pretty much the same as written in the previous (Sarah's) thread though, listed in the article linked here, http://www.billboard.com/bb/daily/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000600691 are Doug's other projects.
I went a little too fast, there is also another article : http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=25470
It says the music was recorded at Jeff's place, that explains the title. What I don't get is the basketball court on the photos --in the first thread-- ... did Jeff have that built for himself too???
Are you kidding me!!! Doug would be 50!!! Gawd!!! I want to grow old like THAT!!! Where did you get that info? ...King's X don't have a bio page on their site...

Is it me or ...he's 54! well, in less then a month!!! Man! that's totally cool! He really doesn't look like ...54 or 44, rather like thirties. I feel dumb just talking about all this, but, I'm really impressed! I guess I won't be scared of getting older, just have to think about Doug.
Gotta say that the news about this project finally coming to fruition totally made my week -- and those pictures were a sweet, sweet bonus!
Can't say I'm much for Southern Rock or The Rolling Stones for that matter, to be honest! But, I'm definitely excited and intrigued as to what this will sound like. To me, the McCready involvement totally came out of left field... The only indication I got that things were even close to how it's turned out is that I recall Mike mentioning in passing during an interview that he'd gone and done some brief session work with Jeff in Montana. I just figured it was the two of them "screwing around" or working together casually. Should be interesting to hear Richard take on lead vocals. I like a lot of his background vocal work with 3F, especially the falsetto he pulls off on "Shiva and the Astronaut". I wonder if Doug had the sole lyric-writing duties?
Alas, in re-reading things again I notice there's no estimated release date yet. I know now's not the time to panic, but since this project took so long to come together, I REALLY hope the guys don't get too bogged down in the mixing process or that things get caught in a lot of industry "red tape".
I have to admit I had to go back and look at the shots again in order to spot the basketball court. Yes, indeed, that is Jeff's that he had built for himself. I've read about it a couple of times in some articles, but I always assumed it was something he had situated outdoors. A basketball court attached to a home studio filled with rugs, candles and scarves... Very "Jeff", don't you think?
*LOL at Richard looking like Ryan Adams in the pictures! I knew he reminded me of someone else!
Thanks for linking to the other articles (though it took me a while to get at the Blabbermouth one, to be honest.)
Psycosmic, good to see you again! As you probably know by now, the Jack Irons album is available for sale through pearljam.com/Ten Club, however, off the top of my head, I don't believe it's actually on the Ten Club label. (Is there even actually a Ten Club label, or is that just a formal title for the fact that the band has no label and are selling things through the fan club? -- Anyone care to enlighten me on the finer points of such business?). Anyhow, the only other tie-in I can see from a marketing angle is that both the Jack Irons website and the Pearl Jam site(s) are both made and maintained by the company called Danger Island.
I wonder what is Jeff's involvment in song writing on this project? I hope we'll hear a lot of his contributions. It does seem that they (tentative Montana) worked a bit in the 3F fashion, jamming together instead of bringing personal demos for the others to listen too. And I can't wait to hear Richard like you say Sarah, I do like his voice a lot with 3F.
A label is just an administrative thing, so I guess that Kelly Curtis must have gotten that running a while ago altough I don't have any info on the matter itself. And Jack Irons released his album on his own label, I don't remember the name but he mentions it in the interview I posted here today.
Isn't it wonderful to have a place of your own, with no one to bother, where you can do everything that you love, I'm thinking about Jeff's place. record music, rehearse and so on and so forth, in his case, skating in the backyard and shooting hoops in the next room. I would love to be able to play music in my place all I want, record and rehearse and paint and all. I'm envious of Jeff place-situation... a bad feeling. Money can definitely be good!
And Sarah, here is the painting I said I love. Look a it for a while and tell me if you agree with me on this, I'm pretty sure of my assumption. I have a feeling that the painting was done in two parts, like the guy's forearms seem not to be the "originals", like if it was another painting/canvas that he (Jeff) cut and pasted on a new one and finished it by adding the forearms, and he would also have saved another part of the "previous" painting he pasted in the right corner to "balance" the different hues. At first I thought this was intended but eventually it struck me that the said forearms were painted in a "sloppier" fashion. That brought me to think what I've just described.
oops... sorry... i totally ****ed up the previous post... don't know what happened... here's what i meant to say

here's what the man himself has to say about this (from the billboard article):
Now that the album is finished, you have to deal with getting it out into the marketplace. What has that process been like?
It's my own label, Breaching Whale. That's been a huge challenge. I've had to adapt a different sort of mindset in doing it, because it's very oriented toward business, details and paperwork, which as a rock'n'roll drummer, especially someone with my stress history, I've shunned like a vampire with a cross. I've had to dive into that, or else the record would never get out.
Basically, Pearl Jam, [the band's manager] Kelly Curtis and everyone in their camp has been very supportive of this record. They're going to release the record via the [Pearl Jam fan organization] Ten Club as of August 17. Then, I have a distribution deal with Burnside. They're a smaller company but they've been really enthusiastic. That's September 7th. Essentially, it's a soft release. The press is starting to come and we're trying to get some footwork in so that after the holidays, more things can happen.
i don't know if there's actually a 10c label... they always said that benaroya was going to be released on the ten club label but there's no label on the actual cd... so i just don't know...
any news on a release date for the ament/pinnick project???
Psycosmic, thanks for isolating those snippets from the Jack interview.
Unfortunately, I haven't heard of there being a release date yet for the Ament/Pinnick project, so I think we'll all be having to keep our ears and eyes open.
... I should have thought about it before... on the old CRB site, third page of Jeff photography and art http://www.angelfire.com/la/ament/new/. It's the painting of the naked boy in the float. Tell me what you think!
I've seen that painting hundreds of times, but it's been ages since I last looked at it. Thanks for reacquanting me with an old favourite. You know, I've always noticed the two different hues, but it never occured to me that it might have been done in different parts, or could be a combination of two different half-finished ideas. To be truthful, I don't think I'm all that perceptive when it comes to analyzing the visual arts, so thanks for enlightening me to what you're noticing.
