Finally *why* do you admire Jeff/his work? such a man of many talents, I admire his humble nature! His vibe is just so cool and his work is unique. Gotta love that.. Cmon you guys. There are so many things to admire/love about Jeff its impossible for me to narrow it down!

- How long have you been a fan of Jeff? i dare not count the years.. lets such say i knew about mother love bone when they were around but appreciated them more after i got into pearl jam.
- Do you like Three Fish? love them!
- Have you ever heard any of Jeff's pre-Pearl Jam work, ie. Deranged Diction, Green River, Mother Love Bone and Temple of the Dog? If so, please rank these bands in order of your preference... (1 = Favourite, 4 = Least favourite)

10 times! London 1996, London 2000, Manchester 2000, Stockholm 2000, Denmark 2000, Boston x 2 2003, Philly 2003, NY x 2 2003.
- What is your favourite Jeff solo composition (ie. Writing both the words and music)? Can be from any of his bands.
Pffffft.. pass, I'll come back to that one!
- What are some of your favourite songs strictly in terms of Jeff's playing? That is kinda difficult too, it's quite a corny answer but I like Rearviewmirror because he's totally responisble for the flow..and he really puts his all into playing that live each time. I love what he does with Porch when that is played live..Laced oo because it's a simple bassline but really beautiful. Also Sleight of Hand.. it's almost awkward but then just goes BANG into that chorus.
- Would you like to see Jeff do a solo album someday? Yes! He's such a flexible musician.. and has proved he can play guitar just as well as bass (well..maybe not AS good), and he can sing too.. - i MUCH prefer his voice to Stone's.
- What is your favourite photo taken by Jeff or piece of art he has created?
- Have you ever met Jeff in person? If so, please describe your experience. If not, would you like to meet him?
I'm not too bothered. In fact, I'd never go out of my way to meet him, even if I was in the same room. What if was having a 'tired' day? I'd be crushed!
- Finally *why* do you admire Jeff/his work?
His depth, spirituality, his artistic style... the fact that he was in Mother Love Bone, Three FIsh and PEarl Jam! I mean..jeesus!
- How long have you been a fan of Jeff? Fan of PJ since Ten, fan of Jeff since VS (approx)... that's actually when I started being REALLY into PJ and started digging deeper into my listening experience and wanted to know more, reading articles and so on...
- Do you like Three Fish? I definitely LOVE 3F. When The Quiet Table came out, they actually went #1 on my list, Pearl Jam took a bit of shade!!! :). Interesting story about this actually. It's when they went on tour to promote their first album that I first heard about them. When they came into town (which was Montreal then), I didn't want to go because I was a die-hard fan of PJ and felt it was disrespectful to go see them just because Jeff was playing in the band. To this day, that is one of the most stupid thing I have done in my life. What a creti*... I understood what I had missed when they released The Quiet Table. I thought that album was SO amazing, so profound, so "fresh", so insightful, beautiful! And that's also when I started looking for the first album. I had a very hard time finding it. I found one used copy somewhere on a website in Holland and ordered it. They never sent it. I finally got my hands on it in 2001 at Cellophane Square in the U district in Seattle!!! I also found the single Laced. Both on CDs, both used.
- Have you ever heard any of Jeff's pre-Pearl Jam work, ie. Deranged Diction, Green River, Mother Love Bone and Temple of the Dog? If so, please rank these bands in order of your preference... (1 = Favourite, 4 = Least favourite)
Yes I did. I have MLB, Apple, and Temple of the Dog. I also have a compilation of Seattle bands call Deep Six which features Green River among others. I don't want to rank. It's too hard and besides, I never heard any Deranged Diction songs and know too little about Green River. But I would love to get my hands on just everything I don't have.
- Have you ever seen Jeff play live? If so, when/where? I have seen Pearl Jam live... only once. Sad. Binaural tour, Montreal Oct 4th 2000. Bought my tickets from a scalper. And I was alone. I was supposed to see them at the Key Arena (Seattle) but was on a trip and something came up, and I started worrying I wouln't be able to make it. So I went to the closest show in time and place, which was in Montreal. I did well, cause I finally ended up on the West Coast on Dec 4th. I would have missed them.
- What is your favourite Jeff solo composition (ie. Writing both the words and music)? Can be from any of his bands. 3F, QT, Resonate was for a long time. I was so suprised to hear his voice. To this day I still wonder why he doesn't sing more often. Although one must admit that Ed is ...kinda irreplaceable. Jeff's voice can be so soft and he also roars with so much power and control (as in My Only Foe)! He can translate his feelings through his voice with so much ease! Just make you sink deeper into the song. Then Low Light, and Other side, a bit in the same theme and feel. This guy seems to have it for 3 based time key signature, 3/4 and 6/8th's. I just wish we could hear him sing his own songs, like the home demos of them. And again, I can't pick a favorite.
- What are some of your favourite songs strictly in terms of Jeff's playing? Favorites... again, none... As a bass player myself, I get most of my appreciation of him as a whole. His evolution through the years is amazing. He's really a model in term of musicianship too. But to stick to his playing alone, Jeff is first of all one of the most solid rock bass player out there. He's solid like a rock! And he doesn't even have to think when he's playing. The flow! like water... But what I admire the most about his playing is his ability to understand the function of tone, being able to use so many different instruments and work around the harmonic content of the bass sound to use. He can do whatever he wants, his choices are always dead on. I mean, it being plucked, picked, strummed, or even bowed, on passive or active pickups, round or flatwound, of upright; scale lengths? No problem. he's always flawless. I call him the "King of Tone". And he does come up with beautiful lines, Sweet Lew is a good example of that. Jeremy is another. But the list is endless. But, PJ being my favorite band, I always stayed as far as I could from playing-learning the songs myself. It may sound weird but, I don't want to get tired of them. I "burnt" quite a few bands like that because I overplayed them. That's the last thing I want to do with PJ.
- Would you like to see Jeff do a solo album someday? Naturally.
- What is your favourite photo taken by Jeff or piece of art he has created? What I love the most is his paintings like the Laced single. As for photography, I love the way he captures children, he gets the "wise" and mysterious side to them as in:
http://www.cloudsrollby.com./jeffart/48.jpg
http://www.cloudsrollby.com./jeffart/41.jpg
http://www.cloudsrollby.com./jeffart/8.jpg
But I also love his vison-feeling in the windows and doors photos like this one I like a lot:

- Have you ever met Jeff in person? If so, please describe your experience. If not, would you like to meet him? Never met him. I don't think I would like that either. Jeff is known to me through his work and what the medias put out. He is not the idea I make myself of him. Therefore I wouldn't really meet the "Jeff" I know about. I would prefer leaving it at that.
- Finally *why* do you admire Jeff/his work? I outlined it pretty well in the previous questions, I think.
I'm new here, so I thought it'd be nice for me to introduce myself
- Name: Colette
- Age: 22 (23 in a bit over a month)
- Male or Female? Female
- Location?: Melbourne, Australia
- How long have you been a fan of Jeff? I've been a fan of PJ since late 93, and I loved 3 Fish from the beginning, but it was only until earlier this year that I truly became a Jeff fan. He is the reason I play bass now and am in a band... both of these things have completely changed my life, I've had a complete turn around in the space of about 10 months all thanks to this man.
- Do you like Three Fish? Yes. A lot! My band wouldn't be called Elusive Ones if I weren't a 3 Fish fan 3 Fish also got me reading Rumi, and he has become my favourite poet... his work is just amazing!
- Have you ever heard any of Jeff's pre-Pearl Jam !work, ie. Deranged Diction, Green River, Mother Love Bone and Temple of the Dog? If so, please rank these bands in order of your preference... (1 = Favourite, 4 = Least favourite) I haven't heard Deranged Diction (would like to tho if someone could point me in the direction of d/ls of theirs or something), but I LOVE TOTD and MLB... not a big Green River fan tho.
- Have you ever seen Jeff play live? If so, when/where? Seen him play w/ PJ 5 times - 95, 98, 03 x 3.
- What is your favourite Jeff solo composition (ie. Writing both the words and music)? Can be from any of his bands. I'm actually not sure of the songs he's done on his own Maybe there should be a list somewhere?
- What are some of your favourite songs strictly in terms of Jeff's playing? From a bass playing point of view, I just love Insignificance, In My Tree, WMA... those 3 songs really got me in to playing. I also love how he does the chorus bit to Alive (heaps fun to play!), his singing and playing on I Just Want To Have Something To Do, his lovely guitar work on Bee Girl (I love what he says about it in LD too!) and everything from 3 Fish
- Would you like to see Jeff do a solo album someday? Absolutely!!
- Have you ever met Jeff in person? If so, please describe your experience. If not, would you like to meet him? I haven't met him... I was lucky enough to meet Ed, Stone and Boom (plus all the guys in Brad), but have yet to meet Jeff. I'd love to meet him, but under different circumstances than those I met Ed in. An old friend of mine met him and Robbi after a 3 Fish show in the US... he even shared a j w/ Robbi... that would've been cool. But the only part of his story I really remember was that when my (now ex) friend was talking to Jeff some chick came up to Jeff and tried to pick him up by saying some dumbass line like "I bet I can guess what color underwear you are wearing". Apparently Jeff wasn't impressed and didn't care too much for her obvious attempt.
- Finally *why* do you admire Jeff/his !work? He has such an honest, spiritual, down to earth way about him... he's a guy who's been through so much and always seems to come out of a bad situation w/ something positive. He is such an inspiration to me as a musician and as a spiritual human being. Plus, is it just me, or does he just get better and better looking w/ age?
GREAT answers, guys! Ah, I can see I'm gonna love continuing to chat with you all on here! So nice to find other people who really appreciate/"understand" Jeff and his work.
Elusive One, I think I may have read your friend's account of that 3F show at one point, because I remember that "underwear" story. Gross!! What was that girl thinking?!!
To the first two posters in this thread, do I know you from somewhere?...
To those of you who play bass, I bow down to you! Not to take anything away from the non-musicians who post here, of course, but I'm always thoroughly intrigued to learn about Jeff's playing from the vantage point of someone who knows what it's like to pick up an instrument. I am completely and utterly ignorant about anything technical/playing-wise when it comes to music, and in turn, simply the idea of playing or making music completely blows me away.
Finally, if anyone wants to hear some Deranged Diction, I have about four or five songs in .mp3. To be honest, I don't know how "legal" it is to have them, since the place I got them from seems to have taken most of them down, but I have them nonetheless! I think they're too big to send over e-mail, and I think I "blew away" my copies of AIM and MSN Messenger, but if you guys would really like to hear them, I'd be more than happy to get hooked up again and send them out. Laura, if you want these for site purposes or anything, let me know.
Anyhow...
- Name: Sarah - Age: 22 - Male or Female? F - Location?: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
- How long have you been a fan of Jeff? I suppose I'm a bit of a "late-bloomer"... Been a Pearl Jam fan since July 17, 1998, from the moment I heard the opening lines of "Once". In terms of really taking a shine to Jeff on an individual level, I guess that first began in late '99-early '00.
- Do you like Three Fish? Yep, I think they're terrific!
- Have you ever heard any of Jeff's pre-Pearl Jam work, ie. Deranged Diction, Green River, Mother Love Bone and Temple of the Dog? If so, please rank these bands in order of your preference... (1 = Favourite, 4 = Least favourite) Yes, I've heard at least a few songs from all of those bands... It's really interesting to hear how far he's come since he started playing. In terms of ranking by preference, I'd have to say #1 = Temple of the Dog, #2 = Mother Love Bone, #3 = Deranged Diction and #4 = Green River.
- Have you ever seen Jeff play live? If so, when/where? I've been fortunate enough to see Jeff play thrice, all with Pearl Jam: Toronto 10/5/00, Toronto 6/28/03, and Montreal 6/29/03. Three of the greatest nights of my life, by far.
- What is your favourite Jeff solo composition (ie. Writing both the words and music)? Can be from any of his bands. I love all of his solo compositions, and without trying to sound weird, I'm always proud when one of his solo songs makes it out to the general public, but that said, my absolute favourite would have to be "Nothing As It Seems". That song means a great deal to me personally, and musically/lyrically, I just think it's gorgeously haunting.
- What are some of your favourite songs strictly in terms of Jeff's playing? I remember becoming very specifically attuned to Jeff's playing when listening to "WMA" one time in the spring of '99, so that song always sticks out to me. I also adore anything that involves him playing the standup bass, since that instrument is so unique in its style and sound. "Dead Man" is another one of my favourites since he's using the standup with a bow (something I honestly hope he does more of in the future). In terms of playing live, my faves are probably "Not For You" and "Indifference." With Three Fish, I'm a big fan of "Shiva And The Astronaut", "Found A Window" (again, standup with bow!) and "Laced". Like Monoxyde and others have been saying, it's hard to choose a favourite simply because his playing seems to fit each song so perfectly, and he's just so incredible at creating an atmosphere and mood.
- Would you like to see Jeff do a solo album someday? Definitely. I was thinking the other day that it would be interesting if Jeff one day released a completely instrumental album, like a film score, or something more along the lines of some of his idols like Brian Eno or Michael Nyman. That's not to say I don't want to hear him sing!
- What is your favourite photo taken by Jeff or piece of art he has created? Call me predictable, but my all-time fave is the "Harmony/Not A Through Road" shot from the tail end of the Yield booklet. I have a framed blowup of it hanging above my stereo.
- Have you ever met Jeff in person? If so, please describe your experience. If not, would you like to meet him? I went through a phase a few years ago when I really wanted to meet him, but that's certainly died down. He seems like a swell guy and I respect the hell out of him, but I can't think of what I could possibly say or do if I were ever to be in his presence that I wouldn't second-guess later, nor do I think that meeting him would be some giant positive spark in my life. I'm quite happy to keep that fan-artist distance.
- Finally *why* do you admire Jeff/his work? Jeez... I screwed myself by asking this question! Hehehe! I'm not sure how to put this into words!
I think I most admire him based on the passion he plays with -- how he seems to give himself over to the music and play from his heart and soul. I love what he is able to convey through his instrument, both in terms of how he seems to "channel" his own emotions and in turn, how his playing contributes to the vibe of a given song. I like how he pushes the boundaries compositionally in terms of what Pearl Jam is allegedly "supposed to" sound like, and no matter what band he's playing with, I always wonder how on earth he's able to come up with the things that he does.
As I've mentioned in other threads, I also really admire how much he seems to have "grown up" over the years, both as a person and a musician... I love his sincerity, his honesty, his humility, and his spiritual depth. I also find I identify a great deal with his lyrics, especially when it comes to themes like physical isolation or loneliness. And I wish in a lot of ways that I had his strength of character in terms of being able to find peace or calm within myself. As an anxiety sufferer, I've found Jeff's discussion of learning how to "find your centre" and practices of that nature, very helpful, in their own little way.
Artistically, I've never been much interested in things like painting or photography since the visual arts always seemed so "inaccessible" to me. It was one of those cases where as a child, I was taken to a lot of museums and art galleries and told that what I was looking at was supposed to be grand and mean something to me. As lame as this sounds, Jeff's work is the first visual art that I really felt I could identify with; it was more "human" and "accessible" to me, in comparison to looking at things where I felt the artist or the work itself was trying to "lord over me" or whatnot.
Finally, on a lighter note, I'm a sports nut, especially when it comes to basketball, so I always find it very refreshing and charming that Jeff is so up-front with his basketball obsession. It's great to see a so-called "celebrity", a grown man, who still retains that over-the-top, boyish enthusiasm about sports.
- Name: Stephan - Age: 23 (24 way too soon) - Male or Female? Male (we seem to be in the minority here... and that's great) - Location?: Germany
- How long have you been a fan of Jeff? I've been a fan of Pearl Jam since i first heard Ten... i became an even bigger fan with No Code... but i have to say that i never really cared about who the people in the band were... it was all about the music... this changed in 2000 when i became a die-hard Pearl Jam maniac
- Do you like Three Fish? I love them! I discovered them really really late... but this makes me like them even more...
- Have you ever heard any of Jeff's pre-Pearl Jam work, ie. Deranged Diction, Green River, Mother Love Bone and Temple of the Dog? If so, please rank these bands in order of your preference... (1 = Favourite, 4 = Least favourite)
1 - Temple of the Dog
2 - Mother Love Bone
3 - Green River
4 - Deranged Diction (I haven't heard too much DD so can't really tell if they're better than GR or not)
- Have you ever seen Jeff play live? If so, when/where? Unfortunately, only once with Pearl Jam... 9/6/2000... needless to say that I could never turn my back on them since then... and I really hope there are more shows to follow soon... PEARL JAM! COME TO EUROPE!!!
- What is your favourite Jeff solo composition (ie. Writing both the words and music)? Can be from any of his bands. I couldn't name a favourite... I like all that have been mentioned above... at the moment, I really enjoy Other Side a lot... by the way, does anybody else agree that Smile (Ament/Vedder, I know) is a very bitter-sweet song? I don't get it why people always refer to it as a happy song... I think it's very sad...
- What are some of your favourite songs strictly in terms of Jeff's playing? arrrgh... I told you that I'm bad at picking favourites... I like his grooves on RVM or Rats... I also like it a lot when he plays standup... his playing is so important on the slow songs like Indifference... I love Laced... hell, I love most of his songs!!! It's great how he doesn't "overplay" like some bass players do... I don't know if anyone feels the same but in Tremor Christ (a song that I don't care too much about) there's ONE note, one slide on the bass... it's really prominent... and this one note makes the song for me...
- Would you like to see Jeff do a solo album someday? Why not?! It's completely up to him... It would be great! But I don't believe this is going to happen soon... he seems to me very much like a team player... it's the synergy between him and other band members that creates great songs... I've got a feeling that he wouldn't like to be in the spotlight all on his own...
- What is your favourite photo taken by Jeff or piece of art he has created? These two have to be my favourites... I can't explain... but they speak to me the most...
- Have you ever met Jeff in person? If so, please describe your experience. If not, would you like to meet him? No, I've never met him... and I think it's very refreshing to see that most people here are not the stalker-types of fans... I don't know, I guess I wouldn't mind at all, but what if I had a bad day or he was in a bad mood... I wouldn't want to write a song called Sweet Jeff but then again I only heard good things by people who actually met him... well, I don't know... it doesn't really matter... all I need is the music...
- Finally *why* do you admire Jeff/his work? This is way too difficult to answer... it's not like I know him or anything... but from everything I know about him I assume that he's a great person... out of all the members of Pearl Jam, Jeff and Eddie are the ones I can relate to the most...
