"Brother" (instrumental): An early candidate for "Ten," having made it as far as the rough mix of the album sent to Epic executives. The song disappeared from the Pearl Jam canon shortly thereafter and is presented here as an instrumental.
McCready: Well, "Brother" was a big point of contention between [guitarist] Stone [Gossard] and [bassist] Jeff [Ament]. I remember Jeff really loving it and Stone either not liking it or being indifferent about it. Jeff and Stone were arguing a lot about this song and were kind of mad at each other. Jeff got so ****ed he went off and started dunking basketballs. It was like, "What's up, dude?" He got really ****ed. He related this story to me recently. It was the typical Stone goes one way/Jeff goes the other. That is just how they work. They have been together forever and the dynamic between the two of them makes things work. There was a big, heated argument. But I thought it was a cool song with a cool vibe. It may have been an example of mid-tempo-itis. I recall the big argument between the two. Jeff said it was almost like he was going to quit. It was serious sh*t. When it came back up recently, they didn't argue, but it was kind of a reliving in a way smaller way. Stone was still not into it. Ed didn't really like the original lyrics. He was like, "Hey man, if you want, go in and put some guitar stuff on it." I didn't have really any idea what to do, but I went down and listened to it and thought I'd do some Brian May-style layered guitars on it. I guess this is a final chapter and a lyrical burial.
MIKE: This song caused an argument between Jeff and Stone back in the day. I put guitars all over it cause Ed asked me to.
JEFF: I fricking loved this Stone riff in 1991... in fact, when Stone said he was over it and didn't want to play it anymore, I nearly quit the band (what a ****ing baby i was)... I do remember going out to the 7 foot hoop behind London Bridge where we were recording and dunking until my wrists were bleeding... ahhh, passive aggressive rage... makes for some good rock n roll, my brother.
Well, at least we all now know the answer to the eternal question of "Can Jeff dunk?"! Hehehe...
In all seriousness, it's cool that we finally got the "full story" about what really went down between Jeff and Stone regarding "Brother". I remember Jeff saying during a Three Fish Internet chat sometime in '99 that the reason "Brother" vanished from the PJ catalogue was because he and Stone had a "huge fight" over it, but of course, I then wondered about the specifics of said "Huge Fight". Kinda cute to find out the whole dispute revolved around something of Stone's creation that Jeff was more into than Stone was himself!
I'm enjoying the instrumental version of "Brother", but I must admit, I still prefer the Ten demo version with lyrics the most. To some extent, it's a little disappointing that the band couldn't all come together and decide to release a cleaner copy of that version -- especially in terms of Stone never really getting into the song, and particularly Ed deciding that he was no longer proud of the lyrics.
There's an interesting "timewarp" quality, though, to hearing Mike McCready circa 2003 soloing all over a track featuring Mike McCready and Pearl Jam circa 1991!
I'd love to see a fight between Jeff and Stone! i bet it would be great entertainment! I sense, from things i've seen and read, that Jeff can get quite bitchy when he wants to!
I bet when he looked well sexy when he stormed out and starting shooting hoops all angry!
...aaah, passive aggressive rage..makes for some sexy looking rock stars... ooooh brother!
(did you see what i did there...ignore me im in an odd mood..)
aimsley!

ahhh.. 'given to fly' you obviously see them both in the way i do. Therefore it must be true. Stone is the smug type so he probably does wind Jeff up.(believe me, Stone reminds me a lot of my sister and she winds me up!)
The question of who would win is tough. I think Jeff would just get enraged whereas I can't imagine Stone raising his voice (I think Jeff would!!) So it could swing two ways. Either Stone would have the control to settle it or he'd just give it to make Jeff shut up! Either way-great entertainment i'm sure!

I thought the picture in the place/date book where Jeff throws a punch at Dave A was just them fooling around and not a serious fight. I'd like to witness an argument betwee Jeff And Stone, all that testosterone in the air!!!!
Yep, the thought of him storming out and dunking until his wrists bled is quite the image... Hehehe... I'm glad Jeff doesn't seem get as wound up about things as he used to, but in general, the man's passion -- in all respects -- is indeed one of the things I like best about him!
