Lost Dogs back cover art

I'm on the Bugs mailing list and thought I'd share this interesting message posted on the various things that have been noted in the artwork for Lost Dogs.

- - -

Ok, this is what we all found out so far about the back cover of Lost Dogs:

One of the dogs is named "Gremmie" (the song Gremmie out of Control)

A dog named "Elton" with sunglasses on (Elton John joke)

A dog with a small clipping on the photo that says "Broken Arrow" has been lost. Neil Young has an album with Crazy Horse that has the title "Broken Arrow". Also, people can call Neil & Peggy. Neil & Peggy live on 'Half Moon Bay Road'. That had something to do with a album title, I think. neil's ranch is called "broken arrow", too.

There's a dog called "Boris".

Also mentioned here is John and Laura. The late bass player from The Who is John Entwistle, and the most well known song he wrote is "Boris the Spider" (I like the fact it has LAURA on it)

A dog named "Angel" (Pearl jam song)

A dog named "Ace" (from Ace Frehley from Kiss?)

Right lower corner it says something like: "Goo By Dee" (tribute to late Dee Dee Ramone?)

Parts of Red, Black and Yellow

In the middle there is a dog, and under the picture it says: Loves Bone Bites (Mother Love Bone) And maybe "Come BITE the Apple", one of the MLB songs

O'Brien can be read somewhere... (Brendan O' Brien)

A dog named "Dakota" (Tchad Blake's dog barked at the beginning of the song Rival)

A dog named "Corwin" (The dog of Brett Eliasons...TouringBand2000 was dedicated to him)

Another note I had to think of.."Call me a dog" is a song from Temple of The Dog. Did anyone think of Temple of The DOG yet?

Maybe, they used this album to pay tribute...In temple of the Dog it was a tribute to Andy Wood.

Now, more people lost their lives... John, Dee Dee etc..The were lost..dogs maybe? just a thought. Also, there's a song from Mother Love Bone called "Stardog Champion"Also, is the animal on the cover of "Off he goes" a dog?

more speculative:

Maybe somebody's birthday date is mentioned or some other important date
then there are those phone numbers
and why is Early mentioned twice?
who are Max, Viggo and Luna, and is Mr. Sparkles someone's nickname?
any black dog could be a reference to Black
Steve! That must be 'our' big tour Steve
That picture right above Luna looks more like a Walrus to me than a dog
(Beatles reference ;))

i read on synergy that peope actually tried to call the phone numbers...

but most of them don't exist and one is a phone booth in seattle...

i thought it would've been cool if they had put the numbers of helplines or charity or something...

i also noticed most of the things about these dogs (even if some of those interpretations are a bit far stretched)

hehe, the elton dog reminded me of one of the greatest record covers ever http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000001EM3.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Wow! I never really looked too much into that but I really like the artwork.I like the comments inside the album too cuz I think it really gives a better insight into their presonalities. Great Stuff! Just a thought though - one of these dogs could be Ed's. It's been quoted on Synergy that Ed was seen at an airport with his dogs.

I noticed all of those things too. I studied it for bout half hour on the long car drive down to my sister's graduation. The best bit, in my opinion, of that cover is the fact that it actually got the interest of my family! (my family have no interest in pearl Jam -they make fun of my obsession!) but they were all like 'awe look at those doggies! i like 'foppa' etc..' (i mean its an interest for the wrong reasons-but its a step in the right direction!)

I think you and the Bugs list crew are bang-on about a lot of your interps, if I do say so myself.

A couple of things I was thinking about besides what you already mentioned...

- From what I can tell, "Goo by Dee" is actually "Goes by Dee...", and I'd agree that it's a Dee Dee Ramone reference.

- I like the "Boris The Spider" idea, but I also remember reading somewhere that Barry Ament (Jeff's brother) and the Ames Bros. design crew own a dog named Boris, so maybe there's a connection there...

- I'd imagine the Mr. Sparkles/Binky thing to be some kind of bizarre, in-joke (Then again, the whole back cover is one big in-joke!)

- I ran and got out the Vitalogy booklet for the "John and Laura" reference since I remembered there was a "John" mentioned within the ""Nothingman" lyrics sheet, but I looked it up and "Nothingman" is dedicated to "John and Kimberly", and not "John and Laura"... so scrap my original theory!

- For some reason, the name/word "Luna" seems familiar as having a connection to PJ, but for the life of me I can't remember what that might be.

That's all I can offer up! The rest, I either have no clue about or haven't looked into as of yet!
