I feel badly about bumping the Kilimanjaro thread for this!
Consider this half-contribution, half-request!
If you read Guitar World, you know there's a section called 60 Minutes in which a different artist every month creates their so-called "ultimate mix tape". After years of searching, I came across Jeff's list of songs from the Sept. '99 issue of Guitar World by absolute fluke within a Message Board posting.
Problem is, I'm almost positive that for each song they list, the artist mentions why they selected that tune... I have never found that for Jeff's 60 Minutes. Does anyone here have the article in full with Jeff's comments? Thanks in advance, and here -- at the very least -- is Jeff's list in and of itself...
Hamza el Din "Sunset" Neil Young "A Man Needs a Maid" Finley Quaye "Sunday Shining" Rain Tree Crow "Rain Tree Crow" Chris Cornell "Sunshower" Ben Harper "I'll Rise" The Police "Walking on the Moon" Free "I'll Be Creeping" Placebo "Without You I'm Nothing" The Clash "The Guns of Brixton"
Thanks for the post Sarah. Since Guitar World is quite a popular magazine, and since the issue you're interested in is relatively recent, I'm pretty sure you'd have no problem finding a copy somewhere, used or new. I'm also pretty sure you could also get a copy at the magazine website itself, don't you think? I've found used copies of BassPlayer (and others) for that matter and they still sell passed issues too. So, I guess that GuitarWorld would do the same.
Very interesting song list. I'm a big fan of early Police myself, that's Regetta and Outlandos. I have so much FUN playing his lines. He's such an original bass player, you can't compare Sting's debut stuff to anyone. Actually, there are a couple of songs that I play just to exercise singing lead on basslines that go at odds (beats) against it; Walking on the Moon is one of them, another one is Bring on the Night and also the reggae Bed's To Big Without You. Not long after I started playing, I was fancying getting a Police tribut band together but, never did. It would have been fun, that's for sure. But you know, tribute bands... I dunno. Never been into that all that much.
I remember reading somewhere that Jeff ranks Regatta De Blanc as one of his favourite records of all-time. And because of that mention, and the couple of times (including this Guitar World list) that he's talked about his fondness for "Walking On The Moon", I always picture him playing the lines whenever I hear the song. A few years ago, I also had a small hope of PJ covering "Message In A Bottle", mainly because I think the bassline to that song is just absolutely tailor-made for Jeff.
I have to admit I was kind of fishing for a freebie with regards to that Guitar World issue, since I kind of already have "half" the article and am currently having to be VERY tight with money. If I had a little more cash to spare, I'd be a lot more likely to do the eBay thing or to purchase a back issue through the magazine's website. Alas, I've looked for it in a lot of used book and mag stores in my town for the last couple of years, and within magazine databases I have access to, and it seems to be another one of those damn articles I just can't find.
