*Please note that I cannot vouch for the sound quality or availability of the recording, as I don't have BitTorrent and therefore haven't listened to it myself*
I think this is legit, as Jeff is a big fan of The Cult and I believe they (PJ and The Cult) both played the PinkPop Festival that year. My only other thought is that this may be from the 6/6/92 Finsbury Park show, as the Five Horizons Concert Chronology explicitly lists PJ as being ahead of The Cult on the bill that day. In any event, I'd imagine this old photo of Jeff hanging out with the band was taken "the day of": http://www.angelfire.com/la/ament/4/29.jpg
Anyhow, discovering this little Jeff/Cult connection got me thinking about other times Jeff has done "one-off" live performances outside of his own bands. (Note: I think we're all familiar with his full discography and in-studio collaborations, so I'm thinking strictly live stuff here). We hear a lot about Eddie and Mike doing these types of appearances, so I thought it might be prudent to make a thread about the times Jeff has done it, since his guest spots are less frequent and also less publicized. If any more of these live appearances happen, we can just add the news and reviews to the thread. Also, please feel free to add to the list if I've missed anything.
APRIL 3, 1994: The famous Atlanta show later released officially by PJon the three-part Dissident single series. King's X is the opening act, and Jerry Gaskill and Doug Pinnick appear later during PJ's set to help out on "W.M.A." Post-show, Ed heads up a Monkeywrench Radio DJ session, and Jeff stops by at the beginning to spin the song "Cigarettes" from King's X's Dogman. Jeff's "special guest" appearance? During King's X's set, he plays bass on their version of "Manic Depression". Copies of this seem to exist within the King's X fan community, though I have no idea about the specifics of the recordings or how to go about getting them... http://home.i1.net/~bytor/kxlist.html (do a Control + F search for "Ament"), http://www.kxcd.net/oldsite/radiopjm.htm (Note incorrect date). Quick note on the Monkeywrench Radio snippet: http://www.monkeywrenchradio.org/radiowaves/19940403.html. I'd venture a guess this might be available through the PJ fan community, perhaps, if one searches hard enough.
NOVEMBER 24, 1996: PJ gig in Portugal... Jeff appears for the last song of Ed's pre-show set alongside The Fastbacks, playing bass on "Young Man Blues". The Who cover set sees Ed and co. christening themselves "The What", with Ed introducing a wig-wearing Jeff as "Willy What". http://www.fivehorizons.com/songs/may97/index.shtml
Jeff's performance of "Manic Depression" with King's X during their April 3, 1994 set in Atlanta is included on the new King's X release, Live All Over The Place.
You'll have to register with allmusicguide.com (free 'n' easy), but for those interested, a short sound clip of Jeff playing "Manic Depression" with King's X in 1994 is available here:
Wow! Thanks!!! You can recognize Jeff's bass tone of choice! You find such little treasures! Well, is it Jeff who plays the bass line? Maybe they both have similar tones. I don't know King's X, it's a band I should definitely explore... my bad...
