Americans!

do you vote? and did you do so in the past? did pearl jam's stance change your attitude towards voting in any way?

sorry for those questions but i just thought there need to be more threads :) i went to every election i had the right to go to... i think only voting gives you the right to bitch afterwards... i voted for my current chancellor and don't agree with everything he does but i feel i have the right to complain because it's not all what he promised to do...

one more question... how come the original democracy has the most outdated voting system and is not really a democracy at all?

let's wait and see what the results will be tomorrow... did i say tomorrow? xmas is more like it if it's anything like the last election...

You seem concerned, so am I, a pleasure to read you.

Yes I do vote and always did, but constantly vote for the loser... Seems progressive ideas will never have the follow spot on it. But as a people, we won't ever get anywhere if we don't take a stand and don't do anything.

I'm losing the little trust I had left in the American people. Eventually Americans will have to learn to live without the support of the other nations. I fear that's what's going to happen. Sorry to speak my opinions out like this, maybe this board is not the right place.

I may more pessimistic then you, psycosmic... I don't remember knowing about a democracy. Not since the hunter-gatherers at least. We know of "some" democracy, that's when it's more a democracy then dictatorship. But the movement to the right is making itself heavier and heavier with every decade that goes by. In Britannica dictionary, fascism is: a philosophy of government that stresses the primacy and glory of the state, (that is pretty clear with the US) to unquestioning obedience to its leader, subordination of the individual will to the state's authority, and harsh suppression of dissent. (Think about the Patriot Act...), it's getting closer and closer....

But we have to remember that it is "people" that are voting tonight. We tend to forget. That's when I feel a knot in my stomach. There are actually MANY people who chose Bush tonight. Who the hell are they ALL! I know of a few thousands, maybe twice or thrice that few, but few nonetheless.

Another point, when there are election in the UK, is the rest of the world watching? Elections in Canada, is there anyone other then Canadians to follow the elections? Speaks volume; speaks weight rather... heavy.

Let's see what tomorrow will bring, four more years or four new years...

'night

Elections.. it's all we're talking about here. The reporters here are saying how bad a Bush win will be for Blair because the UK is quite decided on who they would prefer to see as President.

I've always voted too, even when I wasn't too sure about politics. I voted for Blair but I felt as though I didn't have confidence in anyone else - it's still this way, even though I was against the war in Iraq. Speaking as a British person who grew up (with my father in the army) in an IRA target area, terrorism has always been a part of my life. I've heard bullets being fired at soldiers - seen the bullet holes and blood. I've seen bombs and helped do daily bomb checks from a very early age so this has never frightened me. But I can see why many people in America who are quite new to this fear would vote for Bush because he wanted to 'fight' back. It doesn't mean I understand, and nor would I vote for him.. because he makes me feel less safe. A big and bloody battle was never the British tactic against terrorism, and I'm glad I do not live with the fear that I might get bombed on the tube on my way to work.

Hey psycosmic... I threw out my anti-war/Bush rally t-shirt not long back. I don't know why I did it. I knew I would possibly need it again.. oh well.

oops, they did it again ... seems like the united states are not so united after all... i don't really know what to say... i'm a bit disappointed but not really surprised... maybe i'm way too cynical... half of the americans got the president they deserve (and voted for) and the other half has to deal with it... let's just hope that dissenters don't give up now... in a way, having bush as a president again teaches the left that they have to stand together and work harder for change... with bush everyone has an opinion about politics... people are concerned about politics again... with clinton people only cared about blowjobs... let's hope everyone stays active... the last will be first, or something like that...

laws, you shouldn't have thrown out that shirt... maybe have kept it for another rally - in spring! remember how cold it was that day? i still don't get how you could walk around with that thin shirt... here are some pictures as a tribute to a brilliant shirt no one got the pearl jam reference, i guess... i look a bit stupid in the second pic but it was the best one to read the print... (if you don't like to have your pictures on a message board i'll take them down immediately)

Oups... they did it again... reprise. It sums up my feelings pretty well. Although Kerry was not proposing anything really new, even if he was pretty much dealing with the same issues as Bush, at least he was not as dangerous. I give far too much credit to the intelligence of people, therefore you can imagine that I’m baffled by that election. How in hell could *people* vote FOR Bush? The only ones to beneficiate from having him as President is the corporations, although almighty, they make for quite a small percentage of voters.

I read an article today about the machines that ES&S (republican company) has sold to the US. They manufacture “voting machines, computers. People don’t vote by filing a paper ballot that people count by hand. It was used in Nebraska and Florida among other states. Nebraska never votes Republican, never. But coincidently with the arrival of that machine, Nebraska voted Republican this time around…

Of course the Republicans would not suffer …a recount. It is my belief that Kerry actually won. We very well know by now that US elections are not the cleanest. What are we to expect with this second term? I think there are a lot of people/nations holding their breath…

Is the shirt you’re wearing on the photo the one that has been “disposed of”? Too bad! Was a really cool T! And very a-propos for our times! And you look very good on that photo, by the way.
